THE REST OF THE EVENING played out like a date. I hadnât been on one in decades, but I couldnât help the comparison. Charlotte checked on Sophie, giving her a quick call to say goodnight, and then settled next to me on the couch.
I flipped on the television, and she snuggled into my right side, far more comfortable than I would have thought before today. Maybe I was a fool for thinking this could turn into something because I didnât hesitate to slip an arm around her, nearly sighing with contentment when she rested her head on my shoulder.
How did this happen? Yesterday, I had only admired her from afar, determined to keep my distance. Tonight, I was practically claiming Charlotte. At the very least, hoping for another kiss. Like I was some horny teenager eager to wet my dick.
How the hell did she bring out that carnal side in me?
It was more than simple attraction. The way we spoke to one another, how we felt each otherâs emotions, it implied a connection that was more than skin deep. Iâd only experienced that once in my life, with Peteâs mother. To tell the truth, this fucking scared the shit out of me. I was too old to promise Charlotte a damn thing and I didnât think I could lose someone else I loved the way Iâd loved Patty.
This was a mistake.
I didnât move, though. Even with the internal debate, I didnât want to pull away.
Charlotte released a soft sigh, tilting her head up. âI can hear those wheels churning inside your brain. Youâre far too analytical, Mack. Tonight doesnât have to mean more than two friends pushing aside their worries.â
Friends? Fuck no. I didnât want to be friends. I wanted to be her lover, the man she turned to when she needed release.
âI donât think I can just be friends with you, Charlotte,â I admitted. âAnd thatâs a problem.â
âBecause of your club and obligations as president?â
I didnât think sheâd understand, but she surprised me. âYes.â There were more reasons, but I let her think that was it.
âI get it, Mack. Iâm young. I have a kid. Youâre the president of a motorcycle club. Thereâs women ready to give you what you want any time of the day.â
I didnât respond to that. She could draw her own conclusions. That would be easier than telling her that I was a messed up old fool with a tragic past and far too many regrets.
âI think we should call it a night. If we donât, weâll end up kissing again and I wouldnât want to stop.â
Fuck. She was right. Again.
âOkay. Let me show to your room.â
Charlotte pulled away, immediately taking all her warmth with her, and stood.
I reached for her hand, wrapping my fingers around hers, giving them a light squeeze. She reciprocated, and I knew she wasnât upset. We were both mature enough to understand that going any further meant weâd take this to the next level. Something neither of us seemed ready to dive into yet.
